Our family has farmed the land at Broad Close Farm for over half a century. Nestled in the rolling hills and woodlands to the west of Barnsley three generations of the Charlesworth family have farmed here and the fourth generation is eagerly following in our farming traditions. Still a working farm we specialise in the rearing of rare breeds and are passionate about making them part of our landscape as they would have been hundreds of years ago.

Broad Close Farm - Our cheeky Tamworth pigs forage and live as they would in the wild in our ancient woodland. Our clever Dexter cattle can be seen chewing the cud and whiling away the time with our sheep and lambs as they graze in our surrounding lush fields.

Our farm reared Dexter beef is of exceptional quality and taste as a result of free range rearing. We do not feed our cows antibiotics or hormones or use any artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Please note that we rear a variety of rare breeds on the farm, all free range and all are used to supply our farm shop. Food miles are minimal as the abattoir is two minutes from our farm, ensuring the meat you buy from Broad Close Farm Shop is as fresh as it can be.

The ethos of Broad Close Farm is that our customers should be aware of what they eat and how it has been produced. Everything on our butcher’s counter has been produced at Broad Close Farm. We believe in good honest fresh meat from animals that have had a stress free life.

The welfare of our animals is our main concern. We keep all our rare breeds on a free range basis; they have a happy natural life without restraint. They are fed on grass growing on the farm. The pigs are fed a cereal based ration from a local feed mill. We do not feed them antibiotics or hormones or use any artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

You can see how our animals live by taking a walk along the public footpaths surrounding the farm. From the paths you will see the cattle and sheep grazing in the fields and the pigs foraging in the beech woodland, living a natural and happy life.
